What an MS beam is, and how the series differ
An MS beam is a hot-rolled I-section: two horizontal flanges joined by a vertical web. Nearly all the bending strength lives in the flanges, and the web’s job is to hold them apart — which is why a deeper beam outperforms a heavier but shallower one over the same span.
Indian beams come in families rather than one range. ISMB is the standard medium-weight series and covers most building work. ISLB is a lighter series at the same depths, ISWB a wide-flange series that carries more where headroom limits how deep you can go, and ISJB the lightest junior series. The number is the depth in millimetres, so ISMB 200 is a 200 mm deep medium beam.
