MS, GI or binding wire?
MS wire — plain and uncoated
Black drawn mild steel for indoor, painted or embedded use where corrosion is not the governing concern.
GI wire — zinc coated
The same wire galvanised, so it holds up outdoors on fencing, tying and binding work exposed to weather.
Binding wire — annealed soft
Softened so it twists tight around a rebar crossing and holds without springing back. Softness is the specification.
Sold by gauge and coil
Wire is called out by gauge rather than millimetres, and supplied in coils — give the gauge and the total weight you need.
MS, GI and binding wire — three different jobs
Wire covers three products that get lumped together and should not be. MS wire is plain drawn mild steel, black and uncoated, used where it will be painted, embedded or kept dry. GI wire is the same wire given a zinc coating, which is what lets it survive outdoors on fencing, binding and tying work exposed to weather.
Binding wire is a different animal again: annealed soft, so it twists tight around a rebar intersection and stays there instead of springing back. That softness is the whole specification — a harder wire of the same diameter is useless for the job.
